Tripoli, 18 August 2013 - Special Representative of the Secretary-General for Libya, Tarek Mitri, met today a delegation from the Supreme Amazigh Council and discussed the latest developments relating to the demands and rights of citizens from different cultural and social components in Libya.
They examined, in follow up to previous discussions, the UN conventions and other instruments as well as the role of the United Nations mission in Libya and the forms and areas of support it offers to the Libyan people.

The SRSG stressed that the form of political system in Libya is a matter for the Libyans to decide upon, adding that the drafting and adoption of the constitution is a sovereign Libyan affair.

He emphasized the importance of consensus over the constitution as it is a social contract that draws all citizens together on the basis of national belonging, without discrimination.

He stressed the importance that the UN gives to the rights of all citizens, individuals and groups, in particular those belonging to cultural and social components.

At the same time, he reiterated that the United Nations affirms its respect for national sovereignty.

Both sides concurred on the need to pursue national dialogue among various sides to resolve outstanding issues.
