Le SG des Nations Unies appelle à l’arrêt des hostilités

Le Secrétaire général des Nations Unies, António Guterres, a déclaré qu’il était encore temps d’arrêter les violences en Libye et d’éviter le pire. Il a réitéré, lors d’une rencontre avec les médias après avoir informé le Conseil de sécurité lors de consultations privées sur sa dernière visite en Libye, qu’il n’y avait pas de solution militaire au conflit en cours dans ce pays.
 
Le Secrétaire général a déclaré ce qu’il avait dit en partant qu’il était profondément préoccupé et qu’il craignait fort de voir se dérouler un affrontement sérieux à Tripoli et dans les environs. Ses inquiétudes ont été entièrement confirmées.
« Mais il était encore temps pour un cessez-le-feu - pour une cessation des hostilités et pour éviter le pire qui serait une bataille dramatique et sanglante pour Tripoli. Il était encore temps de reconnaître qu’il n’y avait pas de solution militaire. Seules des solutions politiques peuvent s’appliquer à des situations comme celle en Libye. Je tiens à exprimer toute mon admiration pour le travail que mon Représentant spécial, M. Ghassan Salame, accomplit avec courage sur le terrain ».
 
Le Secrétaire général a conclu qu’il ferait tout ce qui était en son pouvoir pour appuyer les efforts de M. Salame. Il s’inquiète de la situation des migrants et des réfugiés pris dans cette terrible situation.

The United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres said that there was still time to stop violence in Libya and to avoid the worse. He reiterated, during a media stakeout after briefing the Security Council in closed consultations about his last visit to Libya, that there is no military solution for the ongoing conflict there.

The Secretary-General mentioned what he had said when he was leaving that he was deeply concerned and that he had a heavy heart with the possibility of a serious confrontation in and around Tripoli, and his concerns had been until now entirely confirmed.
“But there was still time for a ceasefire to take place – for a cessation of hostilities to take place and to avoid the worse which would be a dramatic, bloody battle for Tripoli. There was still time to recognize there is no military solution. Only political solutions can apply to situations like the one in Libya. I want to express my enormous admiration for the work that is courageously being done on the ground by my Special Representative Mr Ghassan Salame”.

The SG concluded that he will do everything to support Mr. Salame’s efforts, expressing his worries about the situation of the migrants and refugees that were caught in this terrible situation.
